Reese Fulmer & The Carriage House Band

unexpected in the best way

The Carriage House Band is a versatile indie-folk/americana ensemble that features regulars Chris Carey (drums), James Gascoyne (bass), Dylan Perrillo (bass), Jimi Woodul (guitar), Chris Bloniarz (octave mandolin), Connor Dunn (saxophone), and JP Hubbs (keyboard) in a variety of lineup combinations.

Reese and his band have become one of the fastest-rising roots music groups in upstate NY with expansive albums highlighting a reputation for compelling performances. With its rotating cast of talented players, a broad and dynamic body of work, and a refusal to set anything in stone, Carriage House Band shows are always fresh, full of joy, and hard to describe. Think Wilco with hints of Prine and Zappa: "smart, emotionally tuned arrangements and a stage presence that balanced earnestness with unpredictability. Their live performance thrives in the liminal space between genres folk, Americana, jazz and the result is a sound that’s complex without being convoluted." (NYSMusic)

First cutting his teeth in the music business as a manager of the iconic Saratoga Springs listening room Caffe Lena, Reese Fulmer has established himself both as a talented songwriter with an uncommon depth of language and a bandleader unafraid of taking risks and carving a new path between genres. Rather than spending his first few years focusing in on a defining sound, Reese has taken the opposite approach to making music, allowing the versatility of the band to lead to thunderous anthems, gritty blues, tender ballads, and toe-tapping bluegrass. For live shows they let the stage find the sound, appearing in small lineups at listening rooms and coffeehouses to auditoriums, clubs and festival stages with the full ensemble. Local fans can see a dozen shows in a year and never get the same experience twice. For a listener looking for the same familiar sounds their favorite algorithms have developed for them, this probably isn't the right band to follow. For anyone else who might be more interested in music just for the joy of it, get on board the gravy train.

In The Sunlight album review

Jonathan Patrizio for Metroland Now

"With In The Sunlight, Reese Fulmer & The Carriage House Band prove that they are as good in the studio as they are live. The songs sound as polished and refined, as they do raw, fully capturing the band's essence. This album solidifies their presence in the roots music scene, as well as Fulmer’s prowess as a singer, songwriter, and storyteller. "

- NYS MUsic

Fulmer, equal parts folk craftsman and indie provocateur, seemed fully in sync with the band’s fluid musicianship. Their live performance thrives in the liminal space between genres folk, Americana, jazz and the result is a sound that’s complex without being convoluted.

"[Reese Fulmer] has become an award winning songwriter with a poet’s sensibility rich with great storytelling, imagery and a healthy dose of irony. With The Carriage House Band he surrounds himself a revolving cast of extraordinary musicians. The band rarely has the same configuration twice, giving each concert a spontaneity that is electric."
